At E3 2013, the then-president of Microsoft’s Xbox division, stood onstage to provide details for Xbox One, Microsoft’s third-generation console. In that keynote, Mattrick talked about the requirement that Xbox One be connected to the internet 24 hours a day. During an interview with Geoff Keighley Mattrick was asked the question as to what the message to gamers without the internet should do. Mattrick’s response?
“Fortunately we have a product for people who aren’t able to get some form of connectivity; it’s called Xbox 360.” When Keighley replied, “Stick with 360, that’s your message if you don’t like it?”
Mattrick then doubled down and mentioned a user who reached out to him and mentioned he was on a nuclear submarine. To that user, Mattrick said, “I’ve got to imagine it’s not easy to get an internet connection.”
