To celebrate a new season of Fortnite as well as the new OG Fortnite permanent game mode, let’s take a step back to where it all began; the Spike TV Video Game Awards in 2011.
What’s become lost to history is the fact that Fortnite started out as something very different; a zombie survival game. While the original building concept was there from the beginning, the idea was to build shelters and other things to both survive and trap enemies. See the original announcement teaser below.
Many gamers may wonder why, since Fortnite was announced in 2011, why wasn’t it released until 2017? During the post event press conference, Former Epic Lead Designer Cliff Blezisnki shed some light on that subject. When asked if the game would be a physical disc or DLC, Blezinski stated:
“We haven’t announced what it’s going to be yet, we’re still figuring that out. It was a project that was pitched internally several months ago and it came together lightning fast. It’s something that seemed like a no-brainer to build and we’re still trying to figure out what to do with the lightning we have in the bottle.”
