Amazon Games Confirms 2027 Shutdown for New World: Aeternum

It’s a tough week for the New World community. After years of exploring Aeternum, the end of the road has officially been marked on the map. Amazon Games has confirmed that the servers for New World: Aeternum will permanently go dark on January 31, 2027.

For those of us watching the industry, the signs were already there. As of just a few days ago, January 15, the game was quietly pulled from digital storefronts. If you didn’t already own a copy, the gates are now closed. But for the faithful players who are already inside, the world isn’t vanishing just yet—you still have about a year to say your goodbyes.

The studio is planning a “long sunset” rather than an abrupt stop. While the servers stay live, the economy is going to slowly wind down. Starting July 20, 2026, the in-game shop closes its doors, meaning you won’t be able to buy currency or items anymore.

Perhaps the hardest pill to swallow is the content freeze. There won’t be any new expansions or major updates to look forward to. From here on out, the development team is shifting entirely to maintenance mode—fixing bugs and keeping performance stable so that the final year is smooth for everyone still playing.

In a note to the fans, the developers didn’t shy away from the emotion of the moment. They called Aeternum something they “built together” with the community, expressing gratitude for the sheer passion players brought to the game.

“We’re grateful for the passion and dedication of our players,” the team shared. “While we are sad to say goodbye, we look forward to giving the game a proper sendoff.”

MMO shutdowns are always unique; unlike single-player games, when these servers turn off, the world simply ceases to exist. But at least for now, Amazon seems committed to making sure New World: Aeternum doesn’t fade away quietly, promising a proper sendoff for the players who stick around until the very end.
