Hiroshi Yamauchi Defines the Success of Playstation

Following the Nintendo 64 loss in the console wars to the original Playstation, Nintendo Co. LTD President Hiroshi Yamauchi claimed to know why sales of Sony’s first foray into the video game console space was so much more successful than that of Nintendo’s third home console. Despite the success of Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Japanese gamers at the time more interested in RPG games, especially Final Fantasy VII, which was only available on Playstation. To that end, Yamauchi stated that Playstation outsold Nintendo 64 because “depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games.”
